We passed through Slovenia and went to visit the caves of Škocjan, Postojna and the castle of Predjama
Recommended Season: All year
Starting Country: Slovenia
Recommended time: 3 days
Slovenia was a big and pleasant surprise for us. It was not and could not be our objective to make a more in-depth visit because we had controlled time and what was most interesting to visit were these 3 places. In Slovenia, we were surprised by the standard of living, the quality of the roads and the friendliness of its people.
Regarding the places we visited, we will explain one by one further down in the publication.
As we are traveling in a motorhome, we are always more concerned about where to stay overnight, where to park to visit, but once again Slovenia was a pleasant surprise.
Overnight campervan parks are mostly free, we only pay for the services we use such as energy and water. Everywhere we are very well received, when visiting the caves there is parking for motorhomes. All very good.
Below are links to the parks where we stayed overnight in Slovenia:
1 - Camper Stop Orehek (2 nights to visit the caves)
2 - Camper Park Idrija (1 night trip)
3 - Area Camper Krško (2 nights trip to Croatia)

It was one of the visits we made that most impressed me, there are a total of more than 2000 meters of walking inside the cave and more than 500 steps, but what really impresses is the gorge and the underground river.
Škocjan Cave is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is located in southwest Slovenia. It is a karst cave system that features a series of underground chambers, waterfalls and a river flowing through the cave. The cave is known for its stunning natural beauty and unique geological features, such as its massive underground gorge.
The cave system is one of the largest in the world, with a total length of over 10 kilometers. Visitors can explore a section of the cave on a guided tour, which takes them through underground chambers and over a bridge spanning the canyon. The tour also includes a visit to the Martel Chamber, which is one of the largest underground chambers in the world.
The Škocjan cave system is also home to a wide variety of plant and animal species, many of which are endemic to the cave environment. The cave is an important scientific research site, and ongoing studies are focused on understanding the unique ecosystems and geological processes found within the cave.
Overall, Škocjan Cave is a popular tourist attraction and an important site for scientific research and conservation.

Postojna Cave is one of the most famous and visited caves in Europe, located in the Inner Carniola region of Slovenia. It is over 20 km long and is known for its impressive geological formations such as stalactites, stalagmites and columns.
The cave was discovered in the 17th century but only opened to the public in 1819. Since then it has become a popular tourist attraction, receiving over 500,000 visitors a year. Visitors can take a guided tour of the cave, which lasts about an hour and a half and includes a train ride and a walk through various galleries and rooms.
During the visit, visitors can see some of the cave's most famous formations, such as the Concert Hall, which has excellent acoustics and is often used for concerts, and the Brilliant Hall, which is decorated with formations of sparkling crystals.
In addition, Postojna Cave is home to several species of animals, including the olm, a blind salamander that is endemic to the region and that can be seen in tanks during the visit.
What I was amazed at was the information about the proteus animal or as they call it baby dragon, is that this little animal lives more than 100 years and can go more than 10 years without eating

Predjama Castle is a Renaissance castle located in the Inner Carniola region of Slovenia. It is built in a cave in a limestone hillside 123 meters high.
The history of Predjama Castle dates back to the 13th century, when it was built as a fortress by the Patriarchs of Aquileia. In the mid-16th century, the castle was acquired by the Luegg family, who expanded and renovated it. During the renovation, the castle's towers were added and the moat was excavated.
The castle is famous for its unique location as well as its legend. According to legend, the knight Erazem Lueger hid in the castle after killing the commander of the Austrian emperor's army in 1484. He withstood a year-long siege until he was betrayed by a servant and killed. His story has inspired many popular legends and stories.
Today, Predjama Castle is a museum and an important tourist attraction in Slovenia. It receives many visitors each year, who can explore the castle's many rooms, including the kitchen, chapel, dining room and dungeons. In addition, the area around the castle is very beautiful, with many hiking trails and picturesque natural landscapes.
